Businesses wary of big box addition

Velva city officials rejected the sale of 1.4 acres of land for $100,000 when they learned a Dollar General was the new business.
When the same store approached Garrison city officials, 10 business owners or managers listened quietly but later spoke of some wariness for the new addition to the community. Dollar General will be approaching the Planning and Zoning Committee at the end of January for zoning and annexation that would allow a store to be built east of McLean Electric Cooperative. Once approved, building could start in the spring and the store could be open in four months, the city committee officials were told.
A new 9,100 square foot store brings some apprehension from Garrison business owners.
One store owner said she is one step closer to closing, while others spoke of being able to withstand the competition.
Kim Essler, pharmacist and owner of Chase Pharmacy, “I think we would all agree that Garrison is a great place to live and a great business climate.” He said he would like to visit with the new managers to make sure they recognize the community they've joined.
