Celebrating 50 Years

Since 1964, Triangle Y Camp, 13 miles southwest of Garrison and supported by Minot Family YMCA, has been impacting and serving campers, offering them the opportunity for meeting friends and trying new things. This summer, the camp is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
"It’s crazy to think that it has already been around that long," said Will Robinson, director of Y Camp.
A lot has changed in 50 years, but then again, not much at all.
"The first campers were boys only, ages 9 to 16," said Cindy Mueller, a past Y Camp director and current director of program services at the YMCA in Minot. "Today, boys and girls ages 6 to 15 attend camp."
Mueller also said that 50 years ago, a camp session was two weeks long and there weren’t as many cabins to house campers and staff. Skip Krause, another past director, added that the two week long sessions were split into six weeks of boys and four weeks of girls.
"Today, we have 12 cabins that will each hold 10 campers and three to four staff," Mueller said. "Camp sessions are one week long and we have seven sessions throughout the summer months."
The cabins just finished the final phase of a replacement project, which had started in 2008. "We now have 12 beautiful cabins with two of them having bathrooms and heat and air conditioning," said Mueller. This was done so the camp can provide a great experience to individuals that may need those extras in a facility.
