Celebrating a true leader

By ALYSSA ADAM

It was a day to honor and recognize a faithful leader in White Shield, Monday.

For the first time, the community celebrated All Chief’s Day, honoring and showing respect to their chief, Robert "Bobby’ Bear, Jr. Bear has been chief of the Arikara Tribe since the early 60s.

Organizer Yvonne White Bear said All Chiefs Day is the tribal version of President’s Day, the celebration of a leader.

"I thought, we have a living chief here in our tribe," she said. "We should recognize and acknowledge him."

The celebration began with drum players and singers playing traditional Native music while the chief and members of the Young Hawk-Bear Legion Post 253 and Auxiliary circled the room, holding their flags, stepping to the beat of the drum.
