City exploring options for indoor skating rink

Will Garrison’s indoor skating rink be replaced?
About a month ago, the Garrison Park Board decided that the city’s indoor ice-skating rink would not be opened. The reason was based on concern for the integrity of the building that housed the rink. An inspection last month by an engineer confirmed the structure was unsafe.
The inspection reinforced the park board’s decision to keep the indoor rink closed. Their decision was further reinforced on Feb 5 when the structure’s roof collapsed and its walls buckled.
Diane Affeldt, city auditor, said the city-owned structure was insured for “replacement cost” by the State Fire and Tornado Fund.
While the insurer had inspected the damaged structure, Affeldt said the city has not heard the dollar amount it will be reimbursed.
This past week the unstable structure was knocked down by Nygard Construction, Garrison.
Even though the city council discussed preliminary options during its Feb. 7 council meeting, no decisions have been made. According to Affeldt, several factors could influence the final decision. They include insurance reimbursement and additional site work that might be required. Until the debris is cleared, Affeldt said those needs, if any, won’t be apparent.
