Connecting the past with the present

BY STU MERRY

Four historic Arikara figures were immortalized at the White Shield Complex this past week, creations as part of a mural honoring the tribe.
The mural was part of the Cultural and Educational Enrichment Project through the Arikara Community Action Group.
The four Arikara forefathers portrayed on the south wall of the White Shield Complex are Bears Belly, Four Rings, Wild Rose Woman and Arikara Woman, an image honoring all Arikara women.
A dedication ceremony was Saturday as the White Shield community joined together for the project summary and mural unveiling. Student participants shared their experiences and also explained the significance of all mural images and the mural’s title “We Are Still Here.”
Students chose the title to honor Arikara culture, past and present. John Malnourie and his son, Storm, performed an honoring song that spoke to the pride he felt for the community’s new mural.
