Council moves on redy-mix plant

Garrison city officials put bringing a redy-mix plant to Garrison on the fast track Monday night.
Council members agreed to a 90-day lease to enable Dean Hayes and his father Tom to proceed with their plans to establish a redy-mix plant on the old landfill southwest of Garrison. The timeframe would allow the city time to rezone and annex the city’s old landfill in southwest Garrison. The move will take effect beginning Nov. 16. The city’s impound lot, which is located on the old landfill site, will be moved to an undetermined location.
Dean Hayes has been in the contracting business for a number of years, doing business as DJ Hayes Cont. in Turtle Lake. He also operates Pro-1 Construction in Bismarck. Dean has been in the construction and concrete business since 1990.
In another economic development matter, Ken Nysether with Bartlett & West Engineering, reviewed with the council plans for providing sewer and water to the new motel for Garrison. Groundwork has begun on what will be called North Shore Inn and Suites. The facility will be located south across Highway 37 from the Garrison Motel.
In water matters, Maintenance Supervisor Alan Beyreis said well water piping has been reconfigured to the clearwells at the water treatment plant and at the water tower site. He noted water system control replacement is underway and should take about two weeks. Other upgrades are being made at the water treatment system as well.
Also at the meeting, council members recognized the Sales and use Tax recommendation to approve requests by the Garrison Golf Club, Garrison Library, McLean County Sheriff’s Department and Garrison Chamber of Commerce. The Golf Course request was for a $10,000 grant (4-2 with Lehnherr and Chad Rensch voting “nay.” The library request was for $6,800 (casting the lone “nay” vote was Lehnherr). An amount of $350 was for the sheriff department’s Community Halloween Party. The Chamber request was for $2,500 to help defray the cost of the Jason Mitchell Outdoors show that will feature the City of Garrison. (Casting the lone “nay” vote was Hasenwinkel.)
