Courthouse demolition plans one step closer

Courthouse demolition plans one step closer
By STU MERRY

The old McLean County Courthouse’s days are numbered.
At their meeting Dec. 4, commissioners moved one step closer to seeing the structure come down. Demolition bid specs have to be in commissioner’s hands in the next few weeks. Discussing a short demolition window, Commission Chair Steve Lee said, “We need to have that deadline … the earlier the better.”
Once on the commission table, bids will be advertised. The goal is to have the courthouse removed by spring. Bids could be let at a January commission meeting.
States Attorney Ladd Erickson said Washburn city officials have told him they would like the courthouse removed before the ground thaws and load restrictions come on.
Architect Al Fitterer speculates demolition would take from 6-10 weeks.
