School resource officer steps up in new role
Deputy Dave might sound like the name of a cartoon character or even a super hero.
Dave Kamp, the new school resource officer, is no laughing matter although the super hero title seems to fit.
Kamp, a 28-year veteran to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, retired last fall and stepped into the new role with the McLean County Sheriff’s Department serving Garrison schools in January. His new job came with a title given by the students and staff: Deputy Dave.
The job is foremost to provide security and safety for Garrison students. An arrangement was struck in 2018 with the Three Affiliated Tribes, the sheriff’s department and the school district to share the cost of a school resource officer. The plan was to have a security officer on the northern part of the county, in the event that there was a school security issue and officers were 30 minutes away.
