Derby time is here

Derby time is here

By STU MERRY

It’s time to launch the boats. Anglers are ready to take to the waters of Lake Sakakawea in hopes of being in the right place at the right time, using the right kind of bait and having a little bit of luck.
And if they do all of the above, they just might find themselves on the podium, celebrating being the newest member of the elite group who call themselves North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup champions.
The 37th annual tournament, which is often called the derby, is ready to take flight this weekend.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 216 two-person teams had registered to compete. That’s up from 180 last year. A full field is 252.
Prize money for winning the tournament is $10,000 for first place. Back to defend their title as tournament champions are Matt Leibel of Williston and Tory Hill of Minot.
