It’s time to launch the boats. Anglers are ready to take to the waters of Lake Sakakawea in hopes of being in the right place at the right time, using the right kind of bait and having a little bit of luck.
And if they do all of the above, they just might find themselves on the podium, celebrating being the newest member of the elite group who call themselves North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup champions.
The 36th annual tournament, which is often called the derby, is ready to take flight.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 180 two-person teams had registered to compete.
For the past few years the tournament field has not filled its limit of 252 teams, but Governor’s Cup Committee member Joyce Pfliger said it’s not a big deal.
“We’re happy with it,” she said. “(With fewer teams) there’s just not as much payout.”
Prize money for winning the tournament is $10,000 for first place. Back to defend their title as tournament champions are Marshall brothers, Bill and Mike.
