Dollar General eyes Garrison

By JILL DENNING GACKLE
Dollar General has its sites on Garrison. The city's planning and zoning commission will consider the company's interest at a meeting Monday at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
The company is interested in property owned by George Schlichting. It is east of McLean Electric Cooperative on the north side of Hwy. 37. Alan Betchan of AAB Engineering of Sand Springs, Okla., contacted Diane Affeldt, city auditor, to request the meeting.
The location and the store in Garrison are not a slam dunk. The property Dollar General is proposing is not in the city limits and would require a septic system.  The city's comprehensive plan calls for that area to be developed into highway services like motels or gas stations. The area could be annexed into the city, or not, Affeldt said.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions,” Affeldt said.
Dollar General has more than 15,000 stores in 45 states. In North Dakota there are 11 stores open and others, like Kenmare, Parshall and six others, are in the development or building stages. The chain is known for establishing itself in small communities. There is one in Edgeley with a population of 552 and Lakota with 639. There are also stores in Gwinner, Hankinson, Larimore, Ellendale and Cavalier.
