Enrollment grows

Enrollment grows
By STU MERRY

When the Garrison School opens its doors for a new year on Monday, it will see an influx of new students – to the tune of nearly 50.
Broken down, there were 21 new students who registered this past week at the high school level and 28 more at the elementary level at Bob Callies. The figure includes preschool.
Elementary Principal Shelly Fuller shared that as the first day of school nears, the total enrollment is 223. That compares to this past May when elementary enrollment stood at 212.
First-year high school Principal Jim Upgren said there will be 165 students in grades 7-12. This includes numbers from the alternative school. Last year, the high school ended with an enrollment of 144. Total enrollment is closing in on 400 students in preschool through Grade 12. Opening day enrollment will be 388. Last year, first day numbers were at 358 – a 7 percent increase from a year ago.
School officials said they were pleasantly surprised at this past week’s new student registration. Fuller said it is hard to say, but she thinks the growth is due to the flood situation in Minot with rebuilding opportunities for employment, but also a lack of housing.
