Flu grips region, student body

Influenza and other illnesses recently struck hard at Garrison schools.
The student body and area residents have been sniffling and coughing their way to medical professionals’ care.
Garrison Family Clinic reported that high school students were the largest group of impacted by the wave of sickness. Registered Nurse Cindy Mehloff, spokesperson for the Clinic, said the community is experiencing more cases of Influenza B, than A, which a more serious virus that is treated by the flu vaccine.
“It’s heavier than last year,” she said about the numbers of cases of flu.
Twelve to 18 students were diagnosed at the Garrison Family Clinic during the past two weeks with Influenza. There were a total of 23 children and adults diagnosed at the clinic with Influenza A or B. Beside the diagnosed students there have been at least 23 high school students out every day for the past two weeks. With a high population of 171, that’s means 14 percent less students in the classes and hallways.
At least seven student each day were medically diagnosed with some illness (more than the sniffles), spiking on Jan. 23 with 13 students out.
