Editor’s Note: This is the second part in a series about food pantries in the region.

More food is on the shopping lists of four food pantries in the region who are benefiting from St. Joseph’s Community Health Foundation’s Twice Blessed campaign.
A little over $5,700 in matched donations will be distributed to Garrison Area Resource Center, Our Saviors Lutheran Church Food Pantry in Max, the Community Cupboard of Underwood and The Lord’s Pantry in Turtle Lake.
“Everything has gotten so expensive,” said Sonja Moe, treasurer for the Garrison Area Resource Center, which operates a food pantry out of their downtown headquarters.
Many food pantries, including GARC, get their food from the Great Plains Food Bank. However, recently, food has become expensive or hard to get, Moe said.
“Dawn (Kolden, coordinator of the food pantry) puts in an order for meat and we don’t receive the meat,” Moe said to the Garrison Chamber of Commerce during their meeting on Monday afternoon. “It’s kind of challenging.”
However, buying locally has become a tactic used by food pantries to fill their cupboards and line their shelves.
“Krause’s has been very helpful,” Moe said. “We’re basically (spending it) on food and people need the necessities.”
