Fort Stevenson: 2022 was 'one of our better years'

GARRISON — As the sun set on the first day of the year, about 100 people had visited Fort Stevenson State Park. The annual New Year’s Day hike, touted as the first of several hikes to be held at the park throughout the year, attracted a decent number of people, no
doubt with favorable weather – temperatures in the low teens and wind chills flirting with freezing, a departure from arctic chills which had swept the region just a week or two before – being a factor in participation. “We should get a decent crowd,” said park manager Chad Trautman prior to the hike. He estimated that the hike would attract between 60 and 80 visitors. “We’ve had numbers for the hike down in the teens and we’ve had numbers 125 and greater,” Trautman said. “It’s always weather-related.” With 2022 a fresh memory, but
over, it was one for the books for Fort Stevenson.
