A dedication of a Korean War veteran monument in Washington, D.C., last week held a special meaning for White Shield, with several residents in attendance for the ceremony. “It was a really memorable time,” said Madonna Azure of White Shield, about her trip to the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall of Remembrance. “Someone from little old White Shield, North Dakota, whose name would be on there.” That name belonged to her uncle, Col. Elmer Bear, who was classified as Missing in Action (MIA) almost 72 years ago. To Azure’s knowledge, there are at least two members of the MHA Nation listed on the Wall of Remembrance: her uncle, as well as Pvt. First Class Clyde Bears Tail, who was killed in action (KIA) on June 8, 1951. Their names joined 36,634 American servicemen – and also 7,174 Korean servicemen – who died during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
