Recent fundraisers netted over $43,000 for Camp of the Cross, which will use the money to renovate a chapel at their camp southwest of Garrison.
“We are excited because it is time for us to start rehabing and renovating the old church that is on our site,” said the Rev. Janis Sloka, III, executive director of Camp of the Cross.
The chapel, which was the former Zion Lutheran Church, is in need of new siding and electricity upgrades.
The funds were raised through donations made outright through Giving Hearts Day, but also through other means.
A portion of the funds raised came from a pie-in-the-face fundraiser, hosted by TruCommunity Bank, on Feb. 10. A total of $6,670 was raised by the county-wide branches of the bank. Between the four branches, $5,670 was raised. TruCommunity Bank also matched donations made by bank employees, adding an extra $1,000 to the funds raised.
For the fundraiser, visitors at the bank could make donations in the name of a victim – there were six potential victims at the Garrison branch – and as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, whoever had the most money in their box would get a pie in the face. At the Garrison branch, the lucky victim was Taylor Helgeson, lead program manager at Camp of the Cross.
