Garrison Comets? New co-op?

By JILL DENNING GACKLE

Garrison dumped Max and is already looking for a new partner.

The two schools' co-op broke up last month. No more sports were to be played between the two schools after Garrison gave an ultimatum.

Max wouldn't go all the way with a full co-op between the two schools. Max school officials said they would be looking north for a new team to play with them.

Garrison school officials didn't linger long over the break up. They met with Underwood school officials last week to discuss how a co-op between the two schools would go. The first date went well. Underwood has a softball field; Garrison doesn't. But Garrison has a baseball field and Underwood doesn't. They have fewer boys out for sports in the future; Garrison has a large group of boys.

Garrison Superintendent Nick Klemisch said, “Basically where we lack, they can make up for it.”

According to Klemisch, Underwood school officials will negotiate with its present co-op partner, Turtle Lake-Mercer. If that doesn't go well, they'll go to the Underwood school board Thursday (today) to vote on a co-op with Garrison. If approved, the Garrison School Board will vote on whether to co-op with Underwood.

It's not a done deal, though. Board Member Kevin Rime, who attended the meeting with Underwood officials, said Underwood wants to iron out its differences with Turtle Lake-Mercer.

Klemisch said if a match is made it could start as early as next winter with the basketball season.
