Garrison makes happy hunting for vets

Garrison makes happy hunting for vets

BY DIANE NEWBERRY
A rustling sound comes from the brush. This is it; this is the moment. The hunting party hasn’t been walking for too long yet, but Yordan Labrada isn’t sure he’ll be able to hit this pheasant – the first to come across his path. He didn’t have much luck with the clay pigeons on the practice field on the farm and has never shot a pheasant before.
*Boom* the sound of the gun echoes across Glen Schreiner’s land, the pheasant falling neatly into the brush for the enthusiastic collection of Guv, Roy McKenzie’s black lab. Labrada pulled it off; he turns excitedly for a high five.
Labrada is one of the five Purple Heart veterans who came to visit the Garrison area this weekend for pheasant hunting and a banquet, the second annual event the city has hosted with the Wounded Warriors In Action project, which organizes hunts for wounded veterans across the country.
Labrada, a retired Marine sergeant, was accompanied by retired Army Sergeant Major Daniel Essig, retired Army Sergeant Daniel Smith, retired Army Staff Sergeant Terry Saffron and retired Army Sergeant First Class Dan Berryman, a liaison between the veterans and hosts who has been on many hunts with the organization.
