Garrison students’ test scores shared

Shelly Fuller, principal at Bob Callies Elementary School, and Jim Upgren, Garrison High School principal, said they’re pleased with students’ recent test scores. Each presented statistics regarding North Dakota State Assessment (NDSA) test results during Monday’s regular school board meeting.
Most students (grades 3-6) ranked “proficient” or “advanced” in the categories of reading, language arts, math and science. Only six students ranked “novice” in at least one category. More common (but still far below those ranking proficient or advanced) were those whose test scores ranked “partly proficient” in at least one category.
Upgren reported, “We were above the state average in 7th grade language arts, 8th grade math, 8th grade science, 11th grade reading, 11th grade language arts and 11th grade math. We were right at the state average in 8th grade language arts.
“We were below the state average in 7th grade reading, 7th grade math, 8th grade reading and 11th grade science.”
In other business, board members:
•Will continue to seek voter approval for a bond measure to finance school remodeling. A suggestion was made to consider a different architectural firm to help plan the project. Brannan said, “We can’t let the buildings and grounds (need) die.”
•Heard at least one additional classroom teacher will be needed at the elementary school for the upcoming school year. Depending on possible changes in the duties of existing faculty (Melinda Flath and Cyndie Behles), two classroom teachers may be needed.
