Garrison wins state water taste contest

Garrison’s water system is this year’s winner of the North Dakota Rural Water Systems Association’s annual water taste contest.
“This was a statewide competition,” explained the city’s Maintenance Supervisor Alan Beyreis.
Seeing the large trophy and hearing of the award, there were congratulations all around council chambers Monday night.
With recent upgrades, city officials feel there’s room for even more improvement.
“And we can even make it better,” exclaimed Mayor Shannon Jeffers.
Eighteen small and rural water utilities from around the state submitted samples of their water straight from the tap. Garrison’s water was chosen by judges as the most appealing.
The award was presented at a banquet Feb. 2 in Bismarck as a part of the NDRWSA’s 25th Annual Water Systems Expo. The NDRWSA provides training and technical assistance to aid cities under 10,000 population and rural water systems in complying with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act.
The competition is part of a “Quality on Tap!” campaign to emphasize the high quality, standards and consequently, taste of rural water.
The city is now eligible to compete at the national level in February 2012. This event is part of the NRWA Rural Water Rally, an annual legislative event for the 50 state affiliates of the National Rural Water Association.
In other business, the mayor shared with council members his effort in reviewing city planning and zoning ordinances, researching the possibility of updating them.
