Garrison’s water department tackles equipment failures

Turn on the water faucet and be rewarded with fresh clean water. Most of us take that simple ritual for granted.
During the month of December, the Garrison water department experienced several hiccups. Alan Beyreis, city maintenance supervisor, discussed several instances of equipment malfunction during Monday’s city council meeting.
The item of greatest concern to Beyreis and to council members had to do with replacement of the intake pump in Lake Sakakawea. He said commercial divers began the replacement Dec. 2 and completed the work Dec. 8. Beyreis said the pump failure was due to power leads that shorted out at the pump skid.
Council members and Beyreis speculate that the short might be the result of work that was done previously. It was noted that, during the previous work, engineering specs were not followed; the deviation included using shrink-wrap around a splice when the specifications called for use of a 3M product.
