Rome wasn’t built in a day, but the new silos at CHS Garrison were close: in a week’s time, their new silos grew and grew to an impressive 142 feet. Concrete was poured shortly before noon on May 2. Shortly after 1 a.m. this past Sunday, with construction going 24/7, external work was completed with the last bit of concrete poured. There is just under 3,000 yards of concrete above ground and about 1 million pounds of rebar above the ground, which makes up those silos, explained Chris Gratton, general manager at CHS Garrison. There is more than what
meets the eye with these silos. While the silos are now standing, there is more work to be done. “This part of the concrete is done,” he said, adding that capping the silos, as well as internal concrete work, needs to be completed. The silos will offer an additional 915,000 bushels of storage and with their existing storage of 1.1 million bushels, the new addition at CHS Garrison will offer about two million bushels of usable
storage, Gratton said.
