Garrison businesses celebrate 13th anniversary

By NICOLE STEELE

It’s not very often that you see the same people own a catering business and a yard and garden center. But, Garrison has those special people, Kyle and Sandy Giffey. The Giffey’s own Giffey’s Yard and Garden Center and Kyle’s Katering.

Kyle said the the yard and garden idea took root when he started gardening at his home.

"Pretty soon we had more plants than we could use ourselves. So we started selling to friends and family and eventually starting selling at the old Jack and Jill which is now Fezziwig’s," he said.

That one small seed of an idea has flourished and multiplied.

Currently, the Giffey’s have a storefront in Garrison. The Giffey’s sell shrubs, annuals, perennials, potting soil, yard décor, and trees. Recently, the annuals, perennials, and shrubs arrived.

Kyle is known for his green thumb: "I recommend planting during the middle of May."

Kyle’s advice for future gardeners, "Don’t start large right away, see what you can handle and then go from there and also don’t be afraid to try something new."

Starting out his catering career, Kyle attended culinary school in Moorhead, Minn. He then started working for various businesses in Dickinson and also in Mandan. Kyle eventually became the catering manager for the Seven Seas Hotel in Mandan. His love of cooking returned him to Garrison.
