Huesers can do it all

BY TYSON SMEDSTAD

Garrison High School senior, Haley Huesers, is a triple threat.
She plays on the varsity volleyball team, plays varsity football and is a two time top ten finisher at the North Dakota State Track and Field Meet.
This years fall season she is participating in both volleyball and football.
She has played volleyball since elementary school.
“My favorite thing about volleyball is playing against hard teams where we have to play hard together and fight to win,” Huesers said.
This year as a senior she was named one of the captains of her team.
“I think the most important part of being captain is trying to motivate my teammates and make sure we’re all on the same page. It’s important to make sure we’re all working together,” she said.
But this year she decided to try something different.
“I’ve played volleyball since 6th grade except for 7th grade because I played football instead but I continued to go to volleyball open gyms and camps.”
It takes dedication to commit yourself to two varsity sports. That means double the games and double the practices. She goes to football practices right after school then heads straight to volleyball after that. Even with not getting home until after 7:30 p.m., she still decided to do it.
“During morning weights this summer (Justin) Folk said something about me playing football. I’m 90% sure he was joking but then I started thinking about it and decided I wanted to.”
Folk said, “Haley is a special athlete and a great student. She is one of the few people in our school that could handle playing these 2 sports so successfully. We are happy she decided to play football and is having a great year.”
She put her mind to it and did it, and she has a supportive mother who was behind her the whole way.
