Hummel resigns from board

Hummel resigns from board

By CHERYL ODDEN

Effective the end of July, the Garrison School Board will be short two members. During the regular board meeting Tuesday, Duane Hummel, board president, submitted his resignation. Citing personal reasons (needing to spend more time at Lakeside Machinery, a business he co-owns), Hummel said his resignation is effective the end of the month.  During last month’s meeting, board member Lora Wilson tendered her resignation, also effective the end of July. The Wilson family will be moving to Bismarck.
In order to fill the vacancies, the district will advertise for candidates to serve one-year terms by appointment.
When discussion turned to a bond issue for school improvements and expansion, board members decided to keep the proposal on the back burner – at least until the board accepts a final plan from the architects. While the board would like to keep the bond issue at $5 million, an architect’s plan that includes additional amenities comes in at $5.4 million Board members agreed they would like to bring the issue to a public vote prior to Oct. 10 – the deadline to set a mill levy. If the bond election were to be held by that date (and approved by voters), the bond issue could begin with the 2013 tax year.
