After 33 years and two weeks, Les Korgel is leaving the McLean County Courthouse.
Korgel, who served as the county auditor for the past 13 years and been a county employee for more than 30, will retire Friday from his post.
A Garrison resident, Korgel started at the Courthouse when the treasurer position opened up in 1986. Korgel served in the position until 2005, when the office was combined with the auditor and Korgel took on a larger, joint role for the county.
Now, Korgel hands the position over to Beth Knutson, who won an uncontested race for the spot in 2018.
Korgel said he and Knutson spent much of the last year preparing for the transition and that her training will come in handy shortly after she becomes auditor on April 1.
“She’s got a commission meeting on the second and auditors coming in on the third,” Korgel said. “A big tax distribution comes in from the state on the first.”
