Offices and services in White Shield have benefited from construction of newer, larger buildings. And soon, the White Shield Veterans Office will get their turn. Ground was broken for a new veterans building last Tuesday afternoon in the northeast part of the community. Bernadette White Bear Hall, director of the White Shield Veterans Office, explained that the new building would include several amenities: a large gathering space for functions, office space for the White Shield Veterans Office, American Legion Young Hawk/Bear Post 253, the post’s Ladies Auxiliary, as well as space for the Old Scouts and Dead Grass Societies. A feature of great benefit for veterans would be a telemedicine room which Hall said would eventually connect with the Veterans Affairs office in Fargo. The appointment would be coordinated through the VA clinic there to give veterans an opportunity to travel shorter distances. “If the veteran wasn’t able to travel that far from a rural area, then they can come here. As long as it’s something that can be done by telemedicine, they can come,” Hall said. “Whatever we can do to help.” Ground work will hopefully begin in “the next week or so,” she added. “Then, we’re looking at having this building completed next June … really at the end of May,” Hall said.
