Maki, Frost join school board

Maki, Frost join school board

The Garrison School Board found itself in an unusual situation Monday evening. After advertising two open positions on the board, it had letters of interest from three candidates.
Filling the first slot. an at-large position previously held by Lora Wilson, went swiftly. Lisa Maki, Garrison, was appointed to fill Wilson’s seat. Wilson tendered her resignation prior to moving from the community with her family.
Choosing a replacement for Duane Hummel, who served as board president this past year, proved more challenging. Letters of interest had been received from Janice Katin and Jon Frost, both eligible to fill the rural seat vacated by Hummel during last month’s regular board meeting. Hummel resigned to spend more time at a local business he co-owns.
Frost suggested that he and Katin leave the room while board members made their decision. Before the two exited the meeting, each said they had no intention of leaving the community. Katin said she and her husband Ron had chosen Garrison as their retirement community. Frost noted that his son will be a high school junior and that the family would remain in the school district until his graduation and likely longer.
During discussion, Rodger Affeldt, board president, said, “It’ sdifficult to get candidates – now we have two excellent candidates. As other board members chimed in, it was obvious their task was difficult. Following a motion to appoint Frost, members voted unanimously to offer the board seat to him. Helping to make the decision was hope that Katin would remain interested and that she would run for a seat during the next school board election.
After Katin and Frost returned to the meeting, Affeldt said, “After some tough deliberation, we’d like to have you both on the board ...”. He then informed the two that Frost had been appointed and asked Katin to consider running for a seat next spring. Both remained for the duration of the meeting.
