The Max Public School board is faced with the process of hiring a principal and superintendent while the current counterparts both resigned at the school board’s monthly meeting last Thursday evening.
At the meeting, the school board agreed to accept the resignation of Erica Klabunde, the school’s K-12 principal. Later in the meeting, they accepted the resignation of superintendent Travis Engen in a similar fashion. Their resignation letters did not state the reason behind their respective resignations.
“It was a very difficult decision and is bittersweet for me,” Klabunde noted in her letter, dated April 21. “I look forward to the new challenges coming my way, but will miss the Max students, staff and community members. The staff and students in Max will always hold a place in my heart.”
Klabunde was hired on as the K-12 principal last year, while Engen – who also acted as the school’s director of transportation – has been superintendent for three years.
While Klabunde’s resignation was accepted without note, the matter of Engen’s resignation led to some discussion.
“At this point in the year, his contract automatically renews,” explained school board president Galen Scheresky. “If we would have went for a non-renewal, that should have been done by the 15th of April. Mr. Engen would like to resign from the Max School and basically get paid until August 31.”
