Unless visitors to the area are keen on the idea of sleeping in their vehicles, they best call ahead for reservations. Even then, there’s no assurance accommodations will be available.
Dave Jeffrey hasn’t been able to light the “vacancy” sign at either of the motels that he and his wife Beth own for quite some time. In fact, if the current trend continues, he could probably put the signs in storage.
As owners of the Garrison Motel and North Shore Inn & Suites, the Jeffreys have had a very busy summer. Not only have the motels been filled to capacity, but hundreds of prospective motel customers are turned away each week. Even though the Jeffrey’s operation includes 52 rooms, four suites and four in-town cabins, it isn’t nearly enough to accommodate the number of lodging requests. Dave estimates 40-50 phone additional calls each day for those seeking shelter. “We have to turn them away,” he said.
While the motels have always been popular lodging options for fishermen and hunters, this year fewer rooms are available for sportsmen.
