Negative ads, they ‘gotta go’

Negative ads, they ‘gotta go’
By STU MERRY

White Shield fourth graders say they’ve had enough of the negative advertising they saw in campaign ads this past fall and in previous years – and they want to do something about it.
The fourth graders, along with a fifth grade class from Fort Lincoln Elementary School in Mandan, collaborated to work with four legislators, including District 4 Sen. John Warner, D-Ryder, to have a bill introduced in the Senate of the 62nd Legislative Assembly of North Dakota.
Joining Warner in sponsoring the bill are Sen. Dwight Cook, R-Mandan, and Reps. Kathy Hawken, R-Fargo, and Jon Nelson, R-Rugby.
The bill, SB 2273, would enact a new section to the state Century Code saying that use of a candidate’s name in a political ad would be prohibited without consent of the opponent.
The bill was introduced Jan. 19. It had its first reading and was referred to the Government and Veterans Affairs Committee. Testimony will be heard Feb. 3 in front of the committee. Every said the two classes will join forces, testifying in front of the committee members.
