New federal dollars to benefit Max School

The Max School is in line to receive a nice chunk of change, thanks to the state and federal government. And along with that, school patrons, along with other North Dakota residents, will see a nice property tax reduction notice in the mail come this fall.
At their May 19 meeting, Max School Board members heard that the present mill levied by the district, 178, will be required, by state law, to be reduced to 103 mills. The nice thing is that the state will pick up the balance. Funds will come from the state’s budget surplus.
Two other changes will also bring good news to the Max School District.
As part of federal stimulus through Title 1 supplemental funds, the district is due to receive a one-time payment of $51,428. Those funds will be earmarked to enhance technology at the school.
Title 1 is a federally funded program that enables schools to offer an enrichment service for those students who are having difficulty with reading or math and require supplemental instruction in those areas.
A third area – another supplemental one-time grant from the state, will bring approximately $138,000 to the district. School officials tentatively plan to use those funds for one-time improvements to the school. Items discussed included new carpeting, concrete work, small bathroom remodel, and, if funds stretch, maybe a new school bus.
