New sirens for Garrison? By STU MERRY It appears that Garrison will have some new sirens to warn residents of an impending emergency. At Monday’s Garrison City council meeting, Garrison Fire Chief Bruce Schreiner updated the council on plans to add an additional emergency siren for the community. Now, the fire department operates two sirens -- one at the fire hall in downtown Garrison -- the other at the Northview Trailer Court. Schreiner said the reason he researched an additional siren is because there is no coverage in northeast Garrison in the nursing home area. As his investigation continued, Schreiner said he was fortunate enough to find a pair of sirens. Schreiner suggested bringing an official to Garrison to determine the best locations for sirens in the city. He noted both new sirens have voice message capability, which Schreiner said was a big plus. City and fire department officials also huddled briefly about preparing a grant request through the Community Development Block Grant to replace both the rural and city pumper trucks. Schreiner said the plan is have a single, larger pumper truck. In his report, maintenance supervisor Alan Beyreis said the new sanding unit for the city has arrived and is working fine. The sander was purchased from Northwestern Equipment, Fargo for $11,000. He also noted the water main project on Fourth Street SE is complete. The project, done by Nygard Construction of Garrison, stopped short of the original plan (short of Third Ave. SE) due to a previously replaced section of water main, he said. Beyreis noted the storm drain on the south side of North Dakota Highway 37 must be cleaned out to expedite drainage west to the intersection of N.D. 37 and County 15.
