No funding, no building

Camp of the Cross project on hold

Construction on the Camp of the Cross’s new dining facility was stopped.

At the camp’s annual meeting Sunday, a motion was adopted that will leave the progress of the new fellowship hall at a standstill.

Once existing funds for the project are exhausted, construction of the Fellowship Center will cease until funds allow for construction to continue, as determined by the camp’s Capitol Campaign Building Committee.

"We will not be in this building until we raise over a million dollars," Executive Director Janis Sloka said. "What you see … is all we have. We cannot continue. After today, we will let contractors know we want to be released from our bids."

The initial cost of the project was $2.5 million. The amount raised so far is $2.2 million in memorials, gifts, grants and constituent camp donations. Now, with higher than expected contractor costs, the cost ballooned to $3.6 million.
