Officers respond after area murders

Murders of three children and their grandmother in New Town, as well as a death in Parshall, caused McLean County sheriff’s officers to be on alert.
When the call went out at 4 p.m. Sunday for area sheriff’s officers to respond, they headed to various intersections in the county to watch for a vehicle allegedly driven by the assailant involved in murders in New Town.
McLean County Sheriff Don Charging said Signal 100 was launched, which is a term among the state law enforcement. The western counties of North Dakota were all put on alert and two to three officers were posted at intersections until 7:20 p.m.
“Each officer is told to get to their assigned location as quickly as possible,” he said. Although there are many roads leading in and out of each county, Charging said the intersections are targeted because, “They gotta cross someplace and that’s why we do it.” He said there is also a “rover,” an officer who drives various routes in the county during a Signal 100. Sometimes Signal 100 calls for all vehicles to be searched, but in this case officers were told to watch for a particular vehicle.
