Petitions presented to stop Max school building project

It’s possible that a planned construction project at the Max School could come to a halt before it even starts.
At Monday’s school board meeting, petitions were hand-delivered by two former school board members, Arden Haner and Dennis Fannik.
The petition states: "We as property owners of the Max Public School District #50 file this protest against the sale of bonds of indebtedness upon owners and properties listed in this petition."
More than 14 people signed the petitions. Reviewing the petitions, board members noted most of those who signed do not have students in the school. Petitions can be withdrawn up to May 4. Petitions can also be submitted up to that date.
The petition is in response to the school’s resolution authorizing the issuance of and sale of $1.3 million in general obligation building fund bonds. The bond funds would be used by the district to renovate, remodel and reconstruct the school building; to replace the boiler and improve and renovate school property.
The petition is also in response to the November bond election that had two issues on the same ballot – one dealing with the bond issue, which failed. The other question on the same ballot asked whether to raise the debt limit by 5 percent on the assessed value of the taxable property of the school district beyond the 5 percent limit of indebtedness now fixed by the Constitution. That passed by simple majority, 50.3 percent.
