Editor’s Note: This is part three in a series of stories about food pantries in the region.
Every time the garage door opened, a breeze of cold air wafted in and a vehicle left packed with food. The Public Safety Building in White Shield was the venue where the Garrison Area Resource Center held their second quarterly pop-up food pantry last Friday afternoon. Inside, pallets lined the floor, packed with large boxes filled with bags of potatoes, carrots, grapefruit and green apples. Tables were stacked with cloth bags containing chips and other snacks while smaller boxes contained nonperishable goods. Outside, cars pulled up, forming a line. For two hours, vehicles pulled up into the building and after the garage door opened – to help keep the volunteers inside warm – they pulled in. Then, the drivers filled out a brief questionnaire; based on the number of members of their household, they received a respective amount of food. In addition to food from GARC, the pantry was supplemented by extras from Great Plains Food Bank, which delivered the food that morning.
