When students arrive for class in about three weeks at both school campuses in Garrison, they will, like in previous years, be greeted by school officials, welcoming them back. But once inside each building, students will see a wide variety of changes and upgrades that are being made this summer. Some areas will be like new.
While hallways remain cluttered with desks, tables and chairs, mops and buckets and boxes filled with new equipment, some projects have been completed, said Superintendent Steve Brannan, but there’s more to do.
“Most are not complete at this time, but we are hoping they fall into place in the next three weeks,” he said.
School officials are taking a more aggressive approach to improvements – more so than in recent years. Brannan attributes that, in part, to need and additional income.
“We’ve been able to cut some costs and the additional revenue is also coming from the energy sector and federal impact aid,” he said.
Total improvements are close to $450,000. Brannan said the school should get about 25 percent of that back because of the insurance claim due to the fire at the elementary school this spring.
