Sales and Use approves funding for Wally statue

BHG NEWS

Wally the Walleye will be getting a facelift.
Funding for the refurbishment of the Garrison statue was approved at the Garrison City Council’s Sales and Use Tax Committee meeting last Monday evening.
The request for $10,000, which was made by the Garrison Chamber of Commerce, received a unanimous vote from the committee members. The funding for this will come from the Community Development fund.
Nick Klemisch, the former president of the Garrison Chamber of Commerce, made the request for funding. He said that the Chamber is currently exploring transport options – getting Wally the Walleye from its perch and transporting it to Tom Iglehart, who will do the refurbishment – which “seems to be our greatest hangup.”

Pool renovations
Garrison Parks and Recreation and Better Living for Garrison made a joint request for $40,000 for swimming pool renovations.
The Parks and Rec department is applying for the North Dakota Parks and Recreation’s Park District Facility Renovation Grant, which has a 50 percent cash match requirement.
“This grant is due March 15 and everything that we can see in filling out the grant says we are going to be really high in points because our section of the state’s top priority is swimming pools,” said Garrison Area Improvement Association (GAIA) representative Mike Gackle. “And it’s not for new ones, it’s for a repair or a renovation. So our odds of getting it are very good.”
