Sand achieves Gold Award from Girl Scouts
Garrison resident Neela Sand has been a Girl Scout for 10 years.
“(Girl Scouts) really inspires you to become a part of your community and to help out and teaches you so many skills that will help in your day-to-day life that you can always draw on and in your future work,” Sand said.
She started Girl Scouts when she was eight years old and is one of the few teens that makes it all the way through the program.
“In my experience, I watched as my friends faded out because they weren’t as engaged with it anymore,” Sand said. “But I just kept going with it because I found it to be so exciting and you learn so many different things.”
She started in a Girl Scout Troop in Garrison, but as members started dropping out there wasn’t much to do as a single member. So she became independently registered so she could still concentrate on her badges and projects.
As she neared the end of her Girl Scout journey, she knew she wanted to pursue that last milestone: the Gold Award.
