Saturday accident claims life of Douglas youth
A 16-year-old Douglas youth was killed near the community in a one-vehicle rollover this past Saturday.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Chelsey Lies, a junior at Max High School, was driving west on McLean County 2, a gravel road, approximately two and a half miles southeast of Douglas when she swerved to avoid hitting a dog. Lies lost control of the vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab, and entered the north ditch. The vehicle overturned once, coming to rest on its wheels, facing a south/southeast direction. Chelsey was ejected and killed in the mishap. A passenger, her brother Cody, age 14, escaped injury. Neither were wearing safety restraints. Authorities said the accident occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. Assisting the highway patrol was the Ward County Sheriff’s Department, Douglas Fire Department, Garrison Fire and Rescue, and the Garrison-Max Ambulance Service.
Chelsey was active in a number of school activities at Max, including girls’ basketball, FFA and the school paper. She was also the junior class president and member of the student council.
Remembering Chelsey, Max Superintendent Jim Blomberg said that Chelsey was one of those students you really appreciate having in your school.
“She was a good student, got along well with everyone, and was always willing to contribute her time and talents to school activities,” he said. “She will be greatly missed by all of us at Max School.”
