A resounding majority of responses in favor of expanding the high school gym led the Garrison Public School board to vote in favor of considering the project.
At the board’s monthly meeting on Monday night, superintendent Nick Klemisch presented the school board with the results of a survey that he circulated late last month, at which time he asked residents their thoughts on potential building projects at the schools.
The survey had three options: add a wood floor to the elementary school gym, consider pursuing a bond referendum to add space for activities at the high school or leave things as is for now. The majority – 69.8 percent – of respondents voted in favor of the second option.
Board president Roger Affeldt made a motion to consider the bond referendum, and was seconded by board member John Crawford.
For the referendum to pass, it would need 60 percent of the vote.
“For a bond to pass, you have to have a strong showing from the city and the farmers,” Klemisch said.
Klemisch also stressed that the expansion, which would add on to the high school gym, is not just for the purposes of basketball.
“This whole idea it’s all for basketball … no, it’s not,” Klemisch said. “There are so many different activities that we run. If you want to see space, look at our gym use calendar.”
