School bond vote fails

By STU MERRY

The silence was deafening.

Garrison School officials sat in stunned silence Tuesday night in the Family and Consumer Science Room as Superintendent Steve Brannan announced that the proposed $5.9 million bond issue had failed by a mere seven votes.

The unofficial final tally is 491 "Yes" votes to 341 "No" votes for 59.1442 percent. A 60 percent margin is required for passage.

Turnout was heavy – 832 ballots were cast with 200 via vote-by-mail. As board members filed out of the room the lone glimmer of hope was of any ballots that were postmarked Tuesday that could change the final tally. Results are unofficial. Ballots will be canvassed Monday at 6:30 p.m.
