School gears up for future

The classroom crunch is no longer an immediate concern at Garrison elementary school, following board action Tuesday evening.
Since there will be two sections of each elementary grade next year, administration and board expressed concern about being short one classroom.
Board members took the building and grounds committee’s suggestion to turn the computer lab into a classroom and purchase a mobile lab for computers. A mobile lab is a cart with laptops that is moved from classroom to classroom.
“It’s an investment, but it’s an investment that would be used in the future,” Bonnie Nygard, board member, said. Board President Duane Hummel said he thought a mobile lab was already purchased because it was in the technology budget for several years; Superintendent Steve Brannan explained that the purchase was repeatedly moved to the next year. Cost estimates will be reviewed at a future meeting for board action.
The committee and then the full board discussed ideas, including moving the principal’s office and teacher’s lounge into the office area. Steve Seidler, former board member and a visitor at the committee meeting, said he thought the office should be turned into a classroom.
