Severe weather pounds county

By NICOLE STEELE

One week ago, crops across McLean County looked like some of the best in years. Timely rain, moderate temperatures … ideal growing conditions.

A week later, in some areas, that dream of a bumper crop has all but vanished. Fields of crops lay shredded. Small grain is lodged like a deck of playing cards in many areas of the county.

It began this past Thursday as Mother Nature unleashed its fury. There were reports of funnel clouds near Garrison. Winds in the Douglas area were reportedly 60 mph and higher.

In the southern part of the county there was more wind and heavy rain causing downed trees and branches. Hail hit an area between Washburn and Wilton.
