Snowfall – it’s a record!

The winter of 2008-2009 just made the record book. As of 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, snowfall in Garrison officially surpassed the total received a decade earlier.
Until this week, the standing record for snowfall was 65.3” during the winter of 1998-1999.
Although the new record, 66”, surpasses the previous total by a mere .7”, winter is far from over. Regardless of future snowfall, at least one thing is sure – this winter has carved a place for itself in history. And, long after the last remnants of snow melt away, its memory will linger.

That’s what’s on the menu as far as area weather and the weatherman isn’t promising anything better.
Amidst a winter season that has repeatedly blasted the area with bone-chilling temperatures, local residents were treated to a bit of a reprieve late last week when temperatures climbed to the mid-30s. Even the relentless wind seemed to take a break.
The reprieve has been short-lived, however. Over the weekend, TV weather forecasters began telling listeners to brace for more nasty weather. On Sunday, Meteorologist Tom Schraeder (KXTV, Minot) reported that rain was forecast to begin during the overnight hours. He said the impending weather could provide the area’s worst ice storm “in recent history.” And, as if that weren’t enough, additional snowfall was expected to follow.
Fortunately, the threat for a severe ice storm never materialized.
