Spring storm piles it on

Spring storm piles it on

By CHERYL ODDEN

After several days of warning, Mother Nature provided exactly what the weatherman had forecast – an onslaught of snow.
At a time when spring rains might have been well received, a thick blanket of the wet white stuff was not. Unofficial snow depth at Garrison (reported by KXMC-TV, Minot) was 14 inches. The moisture content was more than 1.25 inches. Snow totals at Max were not available.
The massive storm system swept across the northern Great Plains, dumping massive amounts of snow in North Dakota and neighboring states. Traveling eastward, the system lived up to its projected strength.
The majority of the snowfall arrived Sunday and, by Sunday evening, Bismarck and Minot TV stations had begun to list schools, businesses and services that would be closed Monday. Other listings noted that opening would be delayed until mid-morning – or later.
Monday school cancellations included Garrison, Max, White Shield, Underwood and Washburn. Lewis & Clark School District didn’t begin until 10 a.m. and school buses operated “where possible.” By noon, nearly all students were in attendance.
