'Spring'ing into action

Winter is just a fading memory, but it’s mid-May and buds should be on trees, fields should be greening up and recreation areas should be ready to welcome visitors.
Unfortunately, fresh in people’s minds is a 14-inch snowfall a couple weeks ago and temperatures that were more fitting for mid-winter than early spring.
But with a week’s worth of temps in the 60’s, those frowns have been turned into smiles. Better late than never. Now, it’s time to play catch up.

Les Hultberg, manager at Sportsmen’s Centennial Park, probably put it best. He said he thinks people are solar powered. Since temps have warmed and the sun began shining on a regular basis, the phone at the park has been ringing off the hook.
“They are definitely excited to come out,” he said, talking about camping enthusiasts.
Prep work that is normally done by this time is still in progress. Hultberg speculates that people were hesitant to make a commitment until the weather straightened out.
“Our long-term sites are nearly all filled,” he said.
The park underwent some expansion this past fall and winter Additional electric pedestals have been installed. It’s all generated excitement for the park
The late spring has put much of the prep work on hold at Fort Stevenson State Park. Manager Chad Trautman notes that some of the projects that had already been done in the past have had to wait this year, including connecting the deTrobriand slips to shore, prepping areas for tree planting and straightening sign posts.
