Steinwand pleads not guilty, waives preliminary hearing

The former director of North Dakota’s Game and Fish department, Terry Steinwand, 71, of Mandan, pleaded not guilty Nov. 7 in a child sex crime investigation, and has waived his preliminary hearing.
On Sept. 8, the Morton County Sheriff’s Department charged Steinwand gross sexual imposition - sexual acts with a victim under 15.
He was employed at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department for almost 40 years, including 15 years as director.
Steinwand was a resident of Garrison and graduated from Garrison High School before moving to the Bismarck area.
According to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by the District 30 Court system, the arrest followed a report made to police by a Child Protective Service's employee.
On Sept. 3, the child told their mother that Steinwand, “touched their private parts” and reported discomfort when going to the bathroom. The mother reported this to the child’s therapist.
